Laura Rhodes Gallery: turned stool

Laura’s Gallery

Three-legged Stool

This stool is made from poplar and is 13 inches in diameter and stands 13″ tall. Its finish is similar to that which Curtis Buchanan uses for his Windsor chairs. A coat of red milk paint was applied, followed by a coat of black milk paint. The stool was then rubbed down with steel wool to expose a bit of the red paint. Finally, I applied a coat of Danish Oil. The legs and stretchers were turned on my lathe, but the seat was hand shaped with planes, spokeshaves and card scrapers since the diameter was greater than my lathe capacity.

Laura Rhodes joined the West Bay Woodturners club in 2022. She refurbished her vintage Powr-Kraft A11 lathe (Montgomery Ward from the 1940’s or 1950’s) with new bearings and belts, added a variable speed drive motor, and built a custom stand and drive enclosure.
